Parenting Coordination
Ongoing support to help parents implement and maintain effective parenting arrangements
What is Parenting Coordination?
Parenting Coordination is a child-focused alternative dispute resolution process for high-conflict parents who have ongoing disputes about the day-to-day implementation of their parenting arrangements. A Parenting Coordinator helps parents make timely decisions in the best interests of their children while reducing conflict and court involvement.
This service provides ongoing support and guidance to help parents work together more effectively, maintain compliance with court orders or parenting plans, and resolve minor disputes before they escalate into major conflicts.
When is Parenting Coordination Helpful?
High-conflict co-parenting situations
Difficulty implementing court orders
Ongoing disputes about arrangements
Communication breakdowns between parents
Need for ongoing decision-making support
Multiple returns to court over minor issues
How Parenting Coordination Works
1. Appointment
Parents agree to appoint a Parenting Coordinator, or one may be appointed by court order, with clearly defined scope and authority.
2. Orientation
Each party will meet privately with the PC for a 45 minute video session. This is an opportunity for the PC to understand your family's history, communication dynamics, and the issues to be addressed.
3. Ongoing Support
Regular contact to help resolve disputes, improve communication, and support implementation of parenting arrangements by way of a joint 90-minute video. An agenda will be prepared ahead of each session to guide discussion and ensure focus. In these joint sessions the PC will:
- Facilitate constructive dialogue
- Assist in resolving parenting disputes
- Support implementation of parenting arrangements
These sessions typically occur monthly, continuing as needed or until the Court order concludes.
4. Agreements reached
After each session: The PC will document any agreements reached and arrange for both parties to sign.
Is Parenting Coordination Right for You?
Parenting Coordination is particularly effective for families experiencing ongoing conflict that affects their ability to co-parent effectively. If you find yourselves frequently in dispute about implementing your parenting arrangements, or if you have returned to court multiple times over minor issues, Parenting Coordination may provide the ongoing support you need.
The ultimate goal is to help parents develop better communication skills and resolve disputes independently, gradually reducing the need for coordinator involvement while prioritising your children's wellbeing throughout the process.
